Volunteering is free again at Wilderland!
Join us for a 4-week student term
No more fees, on 4-week stays!
In recent years Wilderland had to make the choice to charge a fee for volunteers to come and get involved on the land. We are so grateful to all of the amazing people who came and joined us in those years and paid that fee to help keep Wilderland going.
Now we are ready to start offering 4-week stays for free again!
Getting involved for 4 weeks allows you to really get stuck in to life on the land and learn a variety of skills.
Having committed volunteers for these longer stays also allows us to man our roadside shop consistently, paying for the upkeep of Wilderland so we can continue to stay open to the world.
Staying at Wilderland
What will you be doing?
Based on your skills and interests, the season that you come in, and the priorities at the time, you could get involved in various areas:
In Landcare you may be doing things like implementing & caring for gardens, learning to sow and raise seedlings, managing the syntropics, tree pruning and fruit harvesting.
For Products & Housekeeping you could be harvesting and making teas, creating balms and ointments, running the market stall, pouring honey, and processing our harvest into vinegars, jams, and other preserves.
With Buildings and Maintenance you may be learning about off-grid systems including water and solar systems, as well as milling timber, carpentry, maintenance on buildings etc..
All volunteers should expect to take a shift at our roadside shop one or two times a week (depending on season) - this is what keeps Wilderland afloat, so we appreciate your help on this!
We are also always keen for people to try cooking lunches for the team, as shared lunches fuel the work and the community spirit!
Though we do have a devoted and knowledgeable team here, there are some sectors that are left without team leaders
We are currently looking for a team leader for balms and ointments, this is something the current people are not familiar with so if the project is active when you apply it will a true learning process - which is the point of Wilderland after all!
We would love a beekeeper!
Our honey operation was lost in the 2017 fire. While we have since partnered up with local beekeepers to keep selling quality honey, it would be fantastic to restart a robust onsite bee population for the benefit of our whole ecosytem.
Admin jobs are many at Wilderland, so anyone who can lighten the load of our admin will help us all find more time to be on the land.
What could a day at Wilderland look like?
- Working in a team or on solo projects for the morning
-
1pm communal lunch
- An afternoon of self-directed activities or recreation, e.g. exploring the beautiful land!
It is encouraged to get stuck in to community life. Hosting afternoon yoga sessions, making a dinner for the community, sharing your skill as a 'workshop' for people to learn... all are great ways of keeping the community engaged and learning together.
Expectations:
- 4 weeks stay
- 20 hours engagement per week (including 1 or 2 shop shifts)
- Participating in community meetings
- Taking charge of your own learning experience
- Taking care of your accommodation
House Rules:
- Avoid single-use plastic where possible
- Eco-friendly health- and beauty-care products only
- No drugs or alcohol
